SARTA Earns Ohio Green Fleets Designation from Clean Fuels Ohio

CANTON, Ohio (Sept. 6, 2012) — The Stark Area Regional Transit Authority’s (SARTA) fleet of natural gas-fueled vehicles has been recognized as an Ohio Green Fleet by Clean Fuels Ohio’s statewide Ohio Green Fleets program. The program acknowledges outstanding fleet efficiency, environmental performance and service to the community by improving air quality and reducing Ohio’s dependence on imported petroleum.

SARTA earned designation as a three-star Ohio Green Fleet based on policies it implemented to reduce vehicle emissions and reliance on petroleum fuels. SARTA will receive the award Sept. 12 in Columbus at the Boat House at Confluence Park. The fleet showcase and awards program takes place from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

“We are honored to receive the Green Fleet designation,” said SARTA Executive Director and CEO Kirt Conrad. “This recognition will help SARTA convey to the community its ongoing commitment to implementing cleaner and greener technologies into its fleet of vehicles.”

SARTA has 23 compressed natural gas vehicles and will be adding more to its fleet this year. The transit authority also installed the first public natural gas fueling station in May 2012 and anticipates the local businesses and residents using the CNG fueling station will displace 400,000 barrels of imported oil with domestically produced natural gas annually.

About Ohio Green Fleets

Ohio Green Fleets is a comprehensive program designed by Clean Fuels Ohio to improve the environmental performance and efficiency of public and private fleets. The Ohio Green Fleets program consists of three core components:

1. Direct consultation with fleet managers to develop a Green Fleet management plan tailored to specific organizational needs.

2. Hands-on support and assistance with implementation, including assistance in seeking grant funding to reduce implementation costs.

3. Recognition of environmental leaders through a five-star rating system that scores fleets based on measurable reductions in vehicle emissions and improvements in efficiency.

Since its launch in August 2008, the Ohio Green Fleets program has engaged hundreds of fleets across the state in workshops, seminars and meetings. This work has resulted in the active enrollment of more than 250 public and private organizations — all of who have provided fleet data and begun the process of earning Ohio Green Fleet certification.
