Free rides, prizes offered on local bus services

For the second year, METRO Regional Transit Authority, Portage Area Regional Transportation Authority (PARTA) and Stark Area Regional Transit Authority (SARTA) will offer free rides on their fixed routes every Friday in July and August.

“Free Fare Fridays” are designed to encourage the use of public transportation, demonstrate that residents can use the transit systems easily to reach hundreds of destinations in Summit, Portage and Stark counties, and promote the benefits of regionalization.

In addition, the campaign will highlight recommended “Destinations of the Week” in each county. The attractions, events and venues selected will be posted on and each transit system’s Facebook page every Monday. Riders will be asked to post pictures of their Free Fare Friday trips on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter using the hashtag #FreeFareFridays. Anyone riding a bus on Friday during the promotion will have the chance to receive a prize pack from members of the METRO, PARTA, and SARTA “Rider Patrol.”

To celebrate the start of Free Fare Friday, the first 400 people who ride METRO’s Route 14 or “The Loop” to the Akron Zoo on July 13 will receive half-price admission tickets courtesy of NEORide. Residents of Portage County can catch the Route 14 bus or “The Loop” by taking PARTA’s Route 90 to METRO’s RKP Transit Center. Stark County residents can reach RKP via SARTA’s Route 81. Members of each system’s Rider Patrol will be distributing a variety of giveaway items in the Zoo’s Welcome Center.

Free fares are available only on fixed routes and are not valid for travel on premium services such as METRO’s SCAT, Northcoast Express, or Call-A-Bus; PARTA’s Cleveland Express or DART Service; or SARTA’s Route 4 to Cleveland or Proline service.
