Please note that SARTA trolleys cannot be rented or reserved for any private occasions. As with all SARTA buses, they are used only for public transportation.
A new look in SARTA transportation was ushered in on July 24, 2006 with the addition of three trolley styled buses. The previously owned trolleys were purchased with federal grant money. Two of the three used to service downtown Canton have approximately 250,000 miles each. The third one affectionately named, “Woody” is now wheelchair accessible and has been used for special promotional events such as Communities In Motion held October 4th, 5th and 6th. The other two accessible trolleys made their debut as a Lunch Trolley by running 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday in downtown Canton . A round trip costs only 50 cents.
The Lunch Trolleys were scheduled to loop every 15 minutes. Starting point was at Market and Fourth Street SW , going west on Fourth Street, north on Cleveland Avenue, east through the Cultural Center at 10th Street NW , south on Market and then returning to its beginning. The trolley stoped at existing bus stops, about every two or three blocks on Cleveland and Market.
The trolley buses seat approximately 20 – 30 people and look similar to old-fashioned streetcars. In addition to adding a little ambiance to the area. The trolley was beneficial in saving downtown workers time and effort in getting to various restaurants and stores. Should the trolley service become popular, the agency will look at introducing it in Massillon and Alliance.
